  • Canada has ~36 percent of the world's capacity for potash with Saskatchewan being the largest mine

Potassium Chloride Value Chain (Ag-grade and Feed grade)

Potassium chloride is mined from ore deposits located deep underground or extracted from salt lakes or seas. Conventional underground mines account for nearly 80 percent of global potassium chloride capacity, and underground solution mines for about 6 percent. The remainder is obtained by harvesting natural brines from potassium-rich water bodies, typically using solar evaporation

Grades are granular, standard and soluble or industrial. Agricultural applications use granular and standard. Granular is typically used in more advanced agricultural markets such as the US and Brazil; while standard is more commonly used in major Asian markets

Potassium Chloride Market Landscape

  • Potassium chloride accounts for most of the potash mined worldwide with 96 percent of the world potash capacity, the balance of 4 percent is potassium sulphate, potassium nitrate and potassium-magnesium salts
  • Asia Pacific is the major market for agriculture grade while North America is the major consuming region for animal feed grade

Demand Drivers

  • Demand for feedstock in biofuel. Biofuel is produced from the vegetation of oil palms, and the cultivation of these require significant amount of fertilizers

  • Growing demand from fertigation application supported by rising adoption of micro irrigation systems is anticipated to propel the global demand for water soluble fertilizers
  • Industrial and other applications such as food, animal feed, dietary and nutraceuticals aggregately account  for about 13 percent of the demand globally

Geographic Consumption

  • Asia Pacific is the largest market for fertilizers. The growth of the market in the region is expected to be higher during the forecast period, spurred by countries like India and China
