Shale gas is the natural gas with high content of methane originating from organic rich sediments which are trapped in shale formations. Due to the low permeability of the shale plays, extraction of shale gas using conventional drilling techniques was previously uneconomical. However, with the advancements in the technology, new methods of drilling such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing can be employed for the production of gases that are trapped in these shale formations.
