Drug Serialization: An alternate method to combat counterfeits

The latest in the series of steps taken to fight the challenges posed by the counterfeit drugs is the serialization of drugs. These labeling changes will help the regulators track the drugs throughout their supply chain, starting from production, distribution till the dispensing of the medications to the patients. Some of the regulators have already started taking steps to implement similar systems which include the California E-Pedigree Law and the European Union trying to implement the European Medicines Verification System. The fight against counterfeit drugs is going to come for a price. The cost of procuring the unique number will involve expenses on IT companies.   Author: Devashish Ghosh
