Understanding the basics

Supply market analysis is a method used to single out market characteristics for particular services or goods. It offers insights that are important for devising efficient strategies in terms of planning for large-scale procurement. It offers strategic knowledge of how the market works, its competitiveness, market trends, price variances, capacity and capability of the market, key suppliers, and more.

Supply market analysis framework

A supply market analysis framework consists of the following four dimensions:

Market structure

In this, the supply market segmentation is performed whereby the various market segments of the particular product category are found. Other information such as the total global and regional market size is determined. The key suppliers in the market are found and so are the various market shares of those suppliers. The profitability factors of the various suppliers are determined too.

 Competition

The supply market analysis involves studying the competitors. It involves the evaluation and analysis of the various supply-demand trends to better understand how the various suppliers in the market compete with each other. Pricing trends regarding the goods and services are also determined in this phase and the future trends are identified. This helps in accurate planning.

Supply chains

The supply chain is another dimension of the SMA framework. By analyzing the supply chain, businesses can understand the costs involved at various stages of the supply chain, the value of the various portions of the supply chain, and the risk that is present. It helps understand how to manage the various risks posed too. All this supply chain information helps to create an effective procurement strategy.

Substitute goods and services

The analysis of substitute goods and services is essential. It helps to understand how the demand can be met in case they arise. This part of the SMA framework is particularly important in case there is a monopoly in the market. One of the key areas that should be researched includes the substitute products that can be developed in the future.

Advantages of supply market analysis

There are many advantages of supply market analysis. Here are some of the key ones that underline why supply market research is so much talked about by key stakeholders in so many organizations:

Spots Opportunities in the Market

Investing in a supply market analysis solution helps businesses easily spot the changes that may be required to their offerings or services, saving time and money.

For instance, some businesses might find that the specific spot where they desired to open a store has a matured market in their line of business. With supply chain analysis data, such businesses can refrain from making that decision and look for a better location.

Helps Guide Interaction with Consumers

Once businesses have their research outcomes, they will have sufficient insights to create the best possible tactic for interacting with customers. Understanding the likes and dislikes of the customer base ensures excellent communication and greater returns in the long run.

Reduced Expenses

Creating deals with new suppliers comes with some significant costs. However, supply market intelligence wards off many of such expenses. By cooperating in a mutually beneficial relationship with major suppliers, companies can strive for cost-cutting in the long term.

Better Efficiency

As a defined and established supplier relationship evolves, communication gets better. Suppliers gather a better picture of the businesses they serve, and this enables them to fulfill their requirements more efficiently. Pauses in the supply chain will reduce, and the flow of operations will significantly step up. And when problems in the ordering process come up, the strong working relationship between client and supplier will make it easier to resolve such issues.

Gartner announces 2021 Supply Chain Top 25

Gartner released its annual Supply Chain Top 25 list, ranking the best organizational supply chains for 2021. Gartner goes through hundreds of companies every year, compares them against key parameters, and ranks the top leaders who excel in supply chain management.

Cisco Systems has topped this Supply Chain Top 25 list, followed by Colgate-Palmolive, Johnson & Johnson, Schneider Electric, and Nestle. It also includes the first-timers like Dell Technologies, General Mills, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Pfizer.

The list is created keeping in view the business performance and opinion of these organizations. Collectively, organizations are awarded a composite score, based on which they are ranked.

“In our 17th edition of the Supply Chain Top 25, we saw organizations continuing to deal with the effects of COVID-19 on their businesses. Therefore resiliency and agility capabilities became essential to survival,” said Mike Griswold, VP and team manager with the Gartner Supply Chain practice.

A key highlight of this list, much like last year, is that it includes more organizations that are purpose-driven; organizations that kept the society running, one way or another, during the peak days of the pandemic. Pfizer, for instance, is a fine example of one such organization that's ranked for the first time on this list owing to its innovative and efficient distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Panasonic to acquire Blue Yonder at $5.6 billion

Blue Yonder is a well-renowned supply chain software with names like Agile Network, General Motors, Heineken, and Lenovo in its list of customers. The company is valued at $8.5 billion.

In mid-2020, Panasonic acquired minority ownership in Blue Yonder. It now is set to purchase the remaining 80 percent of the shares, paying $5.6 billion for it.

"Together, Panasonic and Blue Yonder will deliver a unique competitive advantage for customers to drive more automation and actionable, real-time business insights that reduce waste and improve operations, while creating a more sustainable world," read the statement Blue Yonder released.

"I am confident that by combining the power of Blue Yonder and Panasonic, we can create innovation in global supply chains,” Kusumi added," said Yuki Kusumi, CEO of Panasonic.

The Panasonic takeover is a big development, hinting at a more dynamic supply chain ecosystem in the future that's driven by automation and real-time business insights, which subsequently results in improved operations, reduced waste, and higher sustainability.
