In the pharmaceutical industry, Data collection plays an integral part during the drug discovery cycle and also during the post marketing phase. Keeping this in mind, the process of data collection is seen as a potential area to target cost and time savings. In the current world market, technology is booming especially in the personal use market. An overlying effect of this boom has led to the increase in the number of smartphones usage. While using the conventional methods of data collection, i.e. the use of Paper Case Report Forms (CRFs), error rate was high and these errors creep in mainly during data transcription. To correct the data entered into the system; the database needs to be unlocked. This will require additional resources and time. Further, the data needs to be reentered. Hence, the problem is multifold. In countries like Africa, where the cost of using the internet is very high, it is easier for mobile phones to break barriers such as physical infrastructure and basic costs of devices compared to broadband which requires computers for the use of eCRFs.
