Flexible facilities is the buzz word in the industry, driven by single use systems, continuous processing, cost and time advantage and advent of low volume orphan and personalized medicine. As a result there is a shift from large, single product brick and mortar facility to versatile facilities with single use process skids. Apart from the brick and mortar facility there are different kinds of facilities like modular containers, stick-built modular, isolator or controlled environment module. Each of these facility types is cheaper than the traditional facility but have their own strength and weakness. However, modular facilities use the same large HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system thus defeating the very flexibility they should be offering. For a traditional Biomanufacturing facility 70-80% of the energy consumption comes from the HVAC and optimized layout can reduce this by 15%. Thus flexibility is majorly determined by two factors multi-product processing and scalability. And multi-product processing is majorly determined by robust use of single ?use technology.
